Strategic Planning Update

In-person

3.5 hours

16 Western Australian volunteers, Directors, and Management Sub-Committee members

B4HWA approached us for a comprehensive strategic planning update to build upon their foundational work from 2023. The organisation needed to:

  • Revisit and refine their organisational vision, mission and values in light of their recent growth and experience
  • Validate key assumptions and organisational principles underlying their strategic direction
  • Establish clear success metrics and definitions for achievement through 2030
  • Conduct an updated analysis of their internal strengths and weaknesses alongside external opportunities and threats
  • Confirm strategic priorities and focus areas to guide their work over the coming years

The primary objective was to conduct a thorough review and update of Bicycles for Humanity WA’s strategic plan through to 2030. This included ensuring their foundational elements – vision, mission, and values – remained aligned with their current reality and future aspirations while establishing clear strategic themes to drive their impact.

Working collaboratively with the dedicated volunteers, board members, and management sub-committee, we achieved comprehensive outcomes:

Foundation Strengthening:

The organisation’s core vision, mission and values were thoughtfully reviewed and updated to reflect their evolved understanding of their role and impact in the community.

Success Definition:

Clear organisational success indicators were established with measurable targets extending to 2026, providing concrete benchmarks for progress evaluation.

Comprehensive Leadership Development:

The program extended beyond DISC profiling to include two additional leadership modules:

Strategic Analysis:

A thorough SWOT analysis was completed, updating their understanding of internal capabilities and external environment factors that influence their effectiveness.

Strategic Alignment:

Key strategic themes and objectives were validated and confirmed by all stakeholder groups, ensuring unified direction and shared commitment to the path forward.

The session successfully built upon the solid foundation established in their 2023 strategic work, refining and strengthening their approach while maintaining momentum toward their 2030 vision.

Frequently Asked Questions About Strategic Planning

Strategic planning facilitation involves guiding organisations through a structured process to define or update their vision, mission, values, and strategic priorities. A professional facilitator helps teams have productive conversations, complete analyses like SWOT assessments, and establish clear goals and success metrics for their future direction. The facilitator creates a safe environment for honest dialogue, ensures all voices are heard, and keeps the group focused on outcomes rather than getting stuck in unproductive discussions.

Strategic planning workshops typically range from 3-8 hours depending on the organisation’s needs and complexity. Update sessions like this B4HWA workshop can be completed in around four hours when building upon existing strategic work. Comprehensive strategic planning for organisations starting from scratch may require full-day or multi-day sessions. The duration depends on factors such as organisation size, complexity of issues being addressed, and whether you’re creating a new strategic plan or updating an existing one.

Absolutely. Strategic planning is essential for non-profit organisations to clarify their mission, allocate limited resources effectively, engage stakeholders, and measure their impact. This B4HWA case study demonstrates how strategic planning helps volunteer-run organisations establish clear direction and success metrics. Non-profits benefit from strategic planning by gaining clarity about their purpose, ensuring board and volunteer alignment, improving funding applications through clear goals, and demonstrating accountability to donors and community members.

A full strategic planning workshop typically starts from the ground up, establishing or completely overhauling an organisation’s vision, mission, values, and strategic direction. A strategic planning update, like the B4HWA session, builds upon existing strategic work by reviewing and refining elements that may have evolved, validating assumptions, updating environmental analyses, and confirming or adjusting strategic priorities. Update sessions are shorter and focus on refinement rather than creation, making them ideal for organisations with solid foundations who need to ensure their strategy remains relevant and aligned with current realities.

While some organisations attempt to facilitate their own strategic planning, an external facilitator offers significant advantages. External facilitators bring objectivity without organisational politics or biases, allowing leadership to participate fully rather than managing the process, and contributing expertise in strategic planning methodologies and group facilitation techniques. An experienced facilitator can navigate difficult conversations, ensure all voices are heard, and keep discussions productive and focused on outcomes. For important strategic work, the investment in professional facilitation typically delivers significantly better results than self-facilitated sessions.

Successful strategic planning sessions require several key elements: clear objectives established beforehand, the right participants in the room (decision-makers and key stakeholders), adequate time allocated for meaningful discussion, skilled facilitation to guide the process, honest and open dialogue among participants, and concrete outcomes with assigned responsibilities. The B4HWA session succeeded because participants came prepared to engage authentically, the facilitators created a safe environment for discussion, and the organisation committed to implementing outcomes rather than letting the strategic plan gather dust on a shelf.
